Actually, yeah, they can... A pretty standard load in a .50 BMG is a 750 grain bullet moving somewhere in the neighborhood of 3000 feet per second +/- (that's about 2000 miles per hour, if you want to do the math). There's enough energy there for the round to perforate the human body after going through a concrete block (or two) out to, say, 1500 meters or so.
Also, for what it's worth, a "gun" is an inanimate object; a tool in my trade. People "shoot" things.
