Actually we never tried to invade japan. during the war we did something called "island hoping" which meant we would attack some japanese held islands and skip others based on their strategic importance.once we finally had an island close enough to finally mount an invasion (Okinawa) the war in europe was over. this means that an invasion of japan most likely would have involved us, uk, russian, and other foreign troops including aussies. the problem with an initial invasion was that it would cost an estimated 1 million allied casualties. plus more as the war drug on. so the decision to drop the bomb wasnt because the japanese were defeating us. quite the opposite was happening . the purpose was to end a war that had been going on for 6 years (9 in japan)without sacrificing the brave soldiers who were already tired from war. Besides that is one of the most important event in human history. not only did it end the greatest war ever waged, it ushered in the atomic age and also gave us much more medical knowledge on cancers and radiation. much good came from the bad. |
