A New York City police officer was stripped of his
gun and badge after a video posted on YouTube sho
wed him body-checking a bicyclist during Friday's
Critical Mass bicycle ride.
The video (see b
elow), which was shot by a tourist and posted on t
he video-sharing site Sunday, shows bicyclists whi
zzing past uniformed officers during the Times Squ
are protest. One officer begins to stride across t
he street, picking up speed and violently tackling
a bicyclist into a crowded sidewalk.
The vide
o sparked an immediate public outcry and led the d
epartment to place the officer, identified by seve
ral news agencies as Patrick Pogan, 22, on desk du
ty pending the outcome of an internal investigatio
n.
The bicyclist, Christopher Long, 29, was ch
arged with blocking traffic, resisting arrest, dis
orderly conduct, and assault, prosecutors said.
Critical Mass is a leaderless mass bicycle ride
typically held on the last Friday of each month in
cities around the world. The event, which origina
ted in San Francisco in 1992, is alternately refer
red to as a celebration and a protest against auto
mobile-choked streets.

Usually things like this are taken out of context.
This one looks like the cop is a fucking ass hole
. Sue his ass (not the city). If the bike rides ca
use problems then plan for them get enough cops ou
t there to stop about a hundred or so bikers and t
icket them. Next week repeat and ticket 200 and so
on.

officer said Halt.

The cop was wrong to single out this guy. He wasn
't breaking the law. Critical Mass is a bunch of
assholes IMNSHO, but this guy wasn't doing anythin
g different from anyone else there.
If Critical
Mass was breaking the law as a group, then round
up all the cyclists and charge them. Just knockin
g one guy off the bike (and endangering him and pe
ople in the crowd) is out of line.
The city is
liable because the cop was on the job at the time.
The city needs to train and control its employee
s better, or pay the price.
Expect more of this
, now that everyone's got video cams and phone cam
s.

Is it normal practice for every polic

| 24) by ernie * [08/3/08 02:30:53 PM] |
Yes, the cop went overboard. BUT if the cyclist w
as breaking the law how is he any different? The
laws are written to (in theory) keep everything sa
fe for as many people as possible; so if it's ille
gal for him to be riding down the middle of the ro
ad that's probably because someone sometime got hu
rt or killed doing it. I'm all for keeping "
overenthusiastic" cops off the job, but I'm a
lso for keeping dumbasses out of the way too. So w
hat if one cyclist being a DA and getting run over
causes a traffic jam that delays the ambulance co
ming to save you or someone you love? Two way str
eet, look BOTH ways before crossing...

1. Not illegal to protest
2. Not illegal to ride
your bike in the street
3. Nothing bicyclist is d
oing is causing anyone bodily harm
4. It is illeg
al for police officers to use force against a citi
zen without provocation.
Put it all together an
d this incident and many others like it equal a ju
stice system being enforced by dim-witted fascist
pigs , who have no interest in protecting the publ
ic or there freedoms.
If you are one of the many

I am afraid Keiter is not my evil alter ego. He is
one of the many idiots who believe this kind of t
hing is OK because its not happening to him at the
moment.
As far as the only people who complain
about this kind of thing being people who are doin
g something they could get in trouble for. Thats j
ust a totally ignorant statement on Keiters part.
First of all i have never been in trouble ,nor d
o i break any laws. I still believe that police of
ficers should abide by there code of conduct.
Sec
ond, its not the job of the police to dole out pun
ishment of any kind. The reason is you are innocen
t untill proven guilty.
We have these rules for a
reason. The fact is even if the guy on the bike r
an a stop sign, and had no bike light, neither of
which happened, the police officer still had no ri
ght to assault him.
If people dont stand up to th
is kind of thing, soon you will be the victim. It
is happening more and more all the time. People wh
o have done nothing wrong at all are tazered sever
al times for no reason every day. There cases are
dismissed but they have still been assaulted and r
eceive no justice.
As far as the mentality that I
can not complain unless I become a police officer
. Thats just plain idiotic. The citizens of the un
ited states have a right to complain when there lo
cal police forces are filled with unregulated ,ill
tempered fascist idiots who actually think doing
things like this is funny. Go read NYPDrant and te
ll me that what the other police officers are sayi
ng about this and other incidence's like it is not
scary as hell.
They think tazering a citizen wh
o has done nothing wrong , then watching them flop
around like a fish while they pee themselves, and
finally arresting them on trumped up charges is d
own right hilarious. Go check it out for yourself
.
